An escaped bull halted traffic then sent campers running for cover after it smashed its way to short-lived freedom at Murray Bridge this morning.

Witnesses said a livestock transporter and police gave chase at about 9.30am when the animal broke free from a trailer on the road bridge over the River Murray in the centre of town.

It was eventually cornered at the Murray Bridge showgrounds, but not before sending visitors at the nearby campground rushing for safety.

A series of photographs published by Murray Bridge News this morning reveal the bull’s trail of (minor) destruction during its three-kilometre dash.

Witnesses told the site the animal “demolished” the back of its trailer before making a run for it into oncoming traffic on the narrow crossing.

It was eventually recaptured near the Murray Bridge basketball stadium at the showground and secured behind a new makeshift tailgate.

A SAPOL spokesperson said five police officers helped recapture the bull after it kicked the panels off its trailer to escape. No police action will be taken against the driver.

The animal was en route from Naracoorte to Alice Springs when it escaped.
