A 61-year-old man has died and his 46-year-old partner is fighting for life after a house fire in Hackham West on Saturday.

Pete Wall was killed in the blaze that started in a bedroom of the Amsterdam Rd Housing Trust home about 8.30am Saturday morning

His partner, Simone Asker, jumped through a window to flee the flames and was taken to Flinders Medical Centre with life-threatening injuries.

Ms Asker’s daughter Justice Mcdonald told 7News her mum was in a coma with cuts to her arms and legs.

“He (Mr Wall) helped our family out alot actually and it’s really sad he’s gone,” Ms Mcdonald said.

“It’s going to be hard to tell mum that.

“My mum loved him, he was everything to mum.”

Mr Wall was a father and described as a friendly neighbour.

Friends told 9News the couple was inseparable and eager to help when they could.

Two cats and two dogs were also killed in the blaze.

Neighbour Pamela Jenkins, 70, said she saw the smoke from her back window.

“There was this billowing smoke coming from the house and when I saw it, I just went running to the street to see if I could help,” Ms Jenkins said.

“But when I got to the house, the street was already closed off, and the police, ambulances and fire trucks had already swarmed the place.”

Ms Jenkins said she saw the residents of the home being pulled from the blaze.

“I first saw the woman … she was being taken by the ambulances and she called out to me and said her partner is still in the house,” Ms Jenkins said.

Another resident, Kevin – who asked to keep his surname private – said he became aware of the fire after he heard a “muffled” explosion.

“I was in the kitchen when I heard a muffled bang go off,” he said.

“When I stepped out onto the balcony area I saw so much smoke, but I didn’t hear any more explosions.

“Thank goodness the fire crews were able to get here within five minutes.”

Neighbours said the occupants had lived in the home for less than a year.

The MFS was able to contain the blaze in less than 30 minutes, but the damage was catastrophic.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for Mr Wall’s funeral costs and Ms Asker’s medical bills.
