Two teenagers are dead while an older man is fighting for his life in hospital after a car smashed into a tree on the Augusta Highway north of Adelaide.

Two teenagers have died and a man has sustained serious injuries after a car crashed into a tree at Lochiel.

Emergency services were called to the Augusta Highway at 7.30pm on Tuesday night after reports a car travelling north had left the road and struck a tree.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, and rear passenger, a 17-year-old girl, both from Port Pirie, died at the scene.

The front passenger, a 46-year-old Port Pirie man, was flown to Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries.

The Augusta Highway, from Kangaroo Hill Rd to Port Wakefield, was closed for several hours while Major Crash investigators examined the scene but has since reopened.

The lives are the 68th and 69th lost on SA roads, compared to 99 at the same time last year.
