Three men have rushed to save two elderly women stuck inside a holiday cabin – which was filling up with water during Saturday’s storm.

Three men who saved two elderly Murray Bridge women in “chin-deep raging water” during flooding at Middleton are mystery good Samaritans who rushed to save them from their holiday cabin on a floating mattress.

Helen Schulz, 76, was staying with friend Kay Chandler, 82, and feared they may drown when the storm hit about 4pm on Saturday afternoon.

They were inside their cabin in a low-lying area of the caravan park when the water started rising outside, reaching waist-deep and Mrs Chandler’s car started floating away.

“Kay said to me: ‘You hop on the bed and stay there’ – and then the bed started floating,” Mrs Schulz said.

“I said to Kay ‘we’re going to drown!’.”

She called triple-0 immediately and within minutes the mystery men in wetsuits rescued the pair on an inflatable mattress, with Middleton CFS and South Coast SES attending to assist the women.

It’s understood one of the men is the brother of the Middleton Caravan Park owner.

“I reckon an hour would be the maximum and we would have drowned – it was coming up that fast,” Mrs Schulz said.

“Once we were up the top of the hill and we were warm we knew we were OK, they really looked after us.”

Both women were taken to Victor Harbor hospital for observation and were later released.

Middleton CFS on Sunday morning said the three men who assisted the elderly women were unknown good Samaritans.

“Huge thanks go to the three men, who when they heard there were people trapped in a cabin up the back of the caravan park, paddled and waded out into chin-deep raging water to get there and bring them back safely.

“If you know these three men, please thank them from us, and buy them a beer! Bravery awards for the day, go to you three.”

Mrs Schulz’s family were on Sunday searching for the mystery rescuers.

“Thank goodness for the men who responded quickly and rescued our beautiful mum … and thank god mum had her phone and it wasn’t wet and was working,” daughter Leonie Schulz said.

“If anyone knows the people in the pictures helping rescue them – we’d love to send them a thank you gift.”
