Elderly people targeted by digital scam while applying for discount card
South Australian retirees have been targeted by a scam website for senior discount cards that looks worryingly legitimate. Here’s what you need to look out for.

Several unsuspecting and vulnerable elderly South Australians have been lured into paying for a discount card from a fraudulent website.
The official SA Seniors Card as been at the forefront of a new scam after another website, www.seniorscardportal.au, has falsely claimed to supply membership cards for a fee.
The fraudulent site charges a $29 application processing fee and alleges to be “officially approved”.
However, the application process on the certified website – www.seniorscard.sa.gov.au – does not require applicants to use their bank details, credit card information or PayPal credentials for new memberships.
Applicants are also not required to fork out any associated fees during their application.
Executive Director Office for Ageing Well, Cassie Mason urged seniors to remain vigilant, and reassured future members that the “Seniors Card is always free of charge.”
“You will never be asked to disclose your bank, credit card or PayPal details when applying for SA Seniors Card membership,” Ms Mason said.
“South Australian seniors should be aware of this scam website and ensure they are accessing the correct SA Seniors Card website.”
With the concerning rise in digital scams targeting elderly people, applicants should make sure the Government of South Australia’s emblem and the authentic Seniors Card are visible on the website.
Elderly people should contact their bank to discuss preventive measures, if they’re nervous about falling victim to a fraudulent website.
Those who have fallen victim to deceptive websites, should report the incident to the Government operated National Anti-Scam Centre, Scamwatch on www.scamwatch.gov.au.
