The ongoing nationwide egg shortage has forced McDonald’s to impose a temporary time-limit on their breakfast menu across all South Australian restaurants for an unknown period of time.
From Tuesday, McDonald’s stores across South Australia will stop serving their full breakfast menu after 10.30am – an hour and a half, shorter than usual.
However, hash browns will remain on the menu for the whole day.
In a statement to The Advertiser, a McDonald’s Australia spokesman said the fast-food chain is “managing supply of eggs” because of the current industry challenges.
“This means customers can continue to enjoy all their brekkie favourites such as the Bacon Egg McMuffin, Sausage Egg McMuffin, and Big Brekkie Burger – they’ll just need to get in a little earlier than usual,” the spokesman said.
“We’re continuing to work closely with our network of Aussie farmers, producers, and suppliers, as the industry comes together to manage this challenge.”
McDonald’s has not announced how long the temporary changes will last.
It comes after Australia’s biggest outbreak of bird-flu virus – Avian Influenza H7N3 and H7N9 – that resulted in a nationwide stock supply shortage off eggs, along with a seasonal fall off free-range egg production during winter.
Almost two million egg-laying birds have already been killed nationwide as Australian biosecurity authorities battle 11 highly contagious avian influenza outbreaks across three states or territories.
South Australia is currently virus free, state authorities are on high alert and have already placed transport restrictions on poultry and fertile eggs from “high-risk” Victorian properties.
In June, Supermarket giant Coles placed a nationwide limit on shoppers buying eggs – except for Western Australia – with Burnside Village shoppers were alerted by a notice on the shelves. By that Friday afternoon the supermarket’s shelves were completely bare, with no eggs in sight.
Shelves in the eggs section were also bare at Coles in Gawler Green and Woolworths in Blackwood.
