Early results of Sunday Mail ‘Your Say SA’ survey reveal insights on state’s present and future

SOUTH Australians rate ease of travel as one of the most inspiring parts of living here, with many labelling Adelaide a “20-minute city”.
The nearby beaches, hills, parks and vineyards were all highly regarded in the early results of the Sunday Mail Your Say SA survey.
But other results are a serious wake-up call — an overwhelming 89 per cent feel that SA is perceived unfavourably by the rest of the nation, while 73 per cent expect life will be more difficult in the future.
The negative perception of SA as a “backward state” — or worse, a “laughing stock” — still haunts us, evidenced by the survey’s comments and almost any internet thread discussing our problems.
Most respondents so far think the best way to boost tourism is to improve transport and other infrastructure, capitalising on our easy-to-reach attractions and minimal congestion.
Only 13 per cent thought the CBD needed a new major attraction, with many answers suggesting our regional areas could do with one.
“Tell the world we exist, and not only the known places,” one reader wrote.
The ratings of SA as a place to live generally improved with age group - many longterm residents were more than happy to stay, but recent or imminent graduates were worried about finding a job in their chosen field.
