Puppies found by chance in a roadside bin last month have been adopted – and one of the furry friends has gone to her rescuer.
Nicole Olsen, who found eight kelpie puppies heartlessly stuffed into two ziplocked dog food bags in a bin at a riverland truck stop, picked up Angela from the RSPCA’s Lonsdale shelter on Tuesday.
Two of the eight puppies unfortunately died – but the six survivors are being adopted this week.
Mrs Olsen said her family made the decision to adopt one of the puppies soon after the found them – and one tan coloured kelpie stole her heart.
“She was the smallest and seemed to be struggling a lot, so we all had a soft spot for her,” Mrs Olsen said.
“The kids wanted to adopt all six puppies, which of course wasn’t practical, but we felt it was good to adopt at least one of them so our children can care for her themselves, and enjoy a happy ending out of such a sad situation.”
She took the overheated and dehydrated puppies to her Gawler home after discovering them and had to rub them down because they were covered in fleas and maggots.
The puppies have spent the past five weeks with volunteer foster carers.
The RSPCA is still seeking information about how the pups came to be dumped in the bin.
