NEW drone images have captured the progress of the O-Bahn bus tunnel project — and commuters are expected to reap the travel benefits by the end of the year.
The Sunday Mail contracted a licensed drone operator to take photographs of the $160 million construction project from the air — six months after a flyover in November last year.
The aerial photographs reveal the magnitude of the project, which will cut the existing bus commute to and from the north-eastern suburbs to the CBD by seven minutes — just 3 ½ minutes each way — and reduce traffic congestion.
The construction works, which began in April last year, create a tunnel through Rymill Park to connect the bus route to Grenfell St.
The dedicated bus tunnel — to be fitted out with lighting and electrical connections — begins adjacent the National Wine Centre and emerges at East Tce, near Grenfell St.
A Transport Department spokesman said the project was expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The State Government’s O-Bahn project timeline estimates that parking on the eastern side of Hackney Rd and Dequetteville Tce, between Westbury St and Little King William St, will be reinstated during the second quarter of this year.
Linear Park paths under the Hackney Bridge will be reopened and the fountain near East Tce reinstated during the middle of this year.
