A man has died after a serious crash at East Moonta on the Yorke Peninsula, marking the first death this year on South Australian roads.

Just after 3pm on Wednesday, police and ambulance crews were called to Duncan Street after a car left the road and crashed into a fence.

The driver, a 55-year-old East Moonta man, died at the scene.

Major Crash investigators were at the scene and a police spokeswoman said the man may have suffered a medical episode while driving.

The most recent fatal crash on South Australian roads happened on December 31 last year, when a train collided with a truck on the Barrier Highway just 30km from the New South Wales border.

Train drivers Kevin Baker, 57, and Mick Warren, 48, were both killed.

The state recorded 117 road fatalities in 2023, up from 71 the previous year, and the highest number since 2010.
