Monarto Zoo’s new baby chimpanzee has been named by renowned primatologist Dr Jane Goodal — who will visit Adelaide next Tuesday as part of her Rewind the Future tour.
Dr Goodall is famous for her observations of wild chimpanzees, our closest living relatives, having discovered evidence of tool making, meat eating and complex social structures, even war.
She officially opened Jane Goodall's Chimpanzee Conservation Centre at Monarto Zoo in 2008, which houses 11 chimpanzees.
Senior primate keeper Laura Hanley says first-time chimpanzee mum Hannah, 25, “just seems really proud”.
“We are so excited as you can imagine that Jane Goodall named our little girl Hope,” she said.
“It's a really fitting name and is symbolic for many reasons.”
Mrs Hanley says the name describes Hannah's journey from one zoo to another, searching for a place she could settle as well as hope for the future for the Monarto chimpanzee troupe, the species and the planet.
All mums will receive free entry to Monarto Zoo and Adelaide Zoo when any full-priced ticket is purchased on Mother’s Day this Sunday.
Dr Goodall says she is “very happy” to be coming back to Australia this month for her “Rewind The Future” tour with the Jane Goodall Institute Australia.
“In my lecture I’ll be talking about ways in which we can get together to heal the harm that we’ve inflicted on Planet Earth, how we can involve young people in helping in these efforts, because it’s their future that we’ve harmed,” she said.
“And if we carry on with business as usual then the future for our great grandchildren is bleak indeed but if we get together now we can rewind that future grim prediction, come back to where we are today and start moving forward in a different way.”
