A HINDLEY St nightclub has come under fire from health and industry groups over a promotion offering patrons free “durrys.”
A HINDLEY St nightclub has come under fire from health and industry groups over a promotion offering patrons free “durrys.”
The Dog and Duck posted an ad on social media for a “Red Tins & Darts Party” with “Free Durrys!” — but was forced to cancel after a stinging public rebuke.
Owner David O’Connell said it was nothing more than a misunderstanding and that no cigarettes were going to be given away.
He claimed it was a “tongue in cheek” promotion for a new cigarette-themed drink.
“Once we realised the reaction to it we took it down,” he said.
Cancer Council SA general manager Alana Sparrow said it was concerning “regardless of whether or not the Dog and Duck are promoting free cigarettes or a cigarette-flavoured drink”.
“Cigarettes are highly addictive, killing two in three long-term users, and we oppose any events or marketing campaigns that normalise smoking among younger generations,” she said.
The West End Association said the club was not helping Hindley St shake its poor reputation.
