Dessert bar 50sixone’s ice cream could be the most expensive in Australia

THE flavour is not the only thing rich about dessert bar 50sixone’s ice cream creation — it’s also the most expensive in Adelaide. You’ll never guess how much it costs.

ADELAIDE’S newest dessert bar is using the Midas touch to create what is believed to be the most expensive ice cream in Australia.

At $55 a pop, it’s made with fresh vanilla beans and laced with gold flakes before being dipped in white chocolate and 24-carat gold leaf. There are six designs to choose from at Hyde Park cafe 50sixone, which opens on Sunday.

“We wanted to do something unique, something different,” co-owner Simon Flocco said. “We’ve done some research (and) believe it’s the most expensive ice cream pop in Australia.”

While the cafe also will serve breakfast and savoury meals, it’s the sweet stuff that aims to attract attention.

Mr Flocco’s cousin, Jane Rodriguez-Gentile, designed the treat. “The gold has a flaky texture on your palate, but you can really taste the vanilla coming through – maybe it enhances the flavour,” she said.

“We brainstormed and came up with the gold leaf.”

Jade Torres, 23, who works at fellow King William Rd business Wild Child Style Lab, enjoyed a preview. “It’s a really beautiful ice cream,” she said. “You can taste the difference with the vanilla bean. It’s a lot more authentic.”

It will be available for the cafe opening on Sunday from 7am but in future customers will have to pre-order it.
