Plans unveiled for new western suburbs Housing Trust block

First designs have been released for a new public housing block as part of a major $12.6 million, “once-in-a-generation” western suburbs housing boost, with development approval now in motion.

The apartment complex, on the corner of Frederick Rd and Matthews Ave at Seaton, will be home to 22 two-bedroom apartments to be filled with Housing Trust tenants.

There are currently 31,300 public households in SA with 52,300 occupants, 61 per cent of whom are people aged 55 and older and 57 per cent of whom are women.

Two of the apartments will be fully accessible and all will feature open space living areas, with views either to the east, towards the

Adelaide CBD and hills, or west to the coast.

The development application has been submitted to the independent State Commission Assessment Panel for determination and public consultation.

The apartment block is part of a state budget commitment to build 1450 new homes on a 38.5 hectare segment of Seaton’s northwest and redevelop almost 400 Housing Trust homes in the area.

Stage one of the project, planned in conjunction with Renewal SA, includes 137 new homes — 37 of which are Housing Trust properties, 68 are affordable homes and 38 are market sales.

Housing Minister Nick Champion said the development would provide much-needed housing security for public tenants and increase the area’s urban density with a “measured approach”.

Local member Stephen Mullighan said community engagement had highlighted the need for the project, with strong support from residents.

“We know that the housing market is under significant pressure, and the Seaton Renewal Project is just one of the developments that will help boost supply and affordable housing,” Mr Mullighan said.

Affordable homes will be listed through HomeSeeker SA website, with first homes expected to be completed in early 2025.
