Rush-hour delays are expected in Adelaide’s north after a freight train derailed at Two Wells on Wednesday.
Around 6pm, SA Police advised Gawler Rd, between Drew St and Donaldson Rd was closed to all traffic and diversions were activated. No injuries have been reported.
On Thursday morning, police said the diversions were expected to remain in place throughout the morning.
Two Wells resident Jennifer Edwards took to a local emergency alert group on social media to raise the alarm.
Ms Edwards said a train had derailed blocking the Gawler Rd crossing.
“There’s also a grass fire as a result of the sparks,” she said. “The track looks pretty crooked in one area.”
On Thursday morning, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) said the line is expected to re-open around 5pm with speed restrictions.
“Cranes arrived at the incident location on Wednesday evening to assist with the site recovery and the locomotive left the site at around 2am on Thursday morning. Wagons have been lifted clear of the track,” the statement said.
“Scheduled services are still being impacted and ARTC is working with customers to minimise service disruption.
“Safety investigators are attending the site and ARTC will release more information when it becomes available.”
The line is a major freight route and is also used for the popular Ghan tourist service to Darwin.
Adelaide Metro has not reported any disruptions to passenger services in the area.
