Dashcam footage has captured the moment a toddler wandered unattended into oncoming traffic on the Salisbury Hwy.

The driver with the dashcam stopped the car while the vehicle’s passenger ran out to rescue the child and return her to her father.

No one was injured.

The harrowing moment occurred on Sunday when the toddler’s mother was at work, and only learned of the incident today.

“I feel so sad,” said the worried mother, after been shown the footage of the incident by 7NEWS.

“Thank you so much for helping,” said the two-year old’s grateful father.

The toddler’s parents want the broken gate where their child escaped from, replaced with an electric one to avoid any more near misses.

The Advertiser visited the apartment block from where the toddler emerged but the child’s family did not appear to be home.

The driveway and parking area measured about ten metres in length, and a neighbour said the gate was often left open to allow tenants easy access.

The busy intersection of Salisbury Hwy and Commercial Rd is less than 50 metres from where the toddler forced traffic to a stop.

Neighbour Mandy, 49, said that as a mother with four children at home, it was “terrifying” watching the footage.

“I’ve left the gate open today because I’m expecting a delivery, but otherwise, it’s never open,” she said.

“It’s scary, but also, I feel bad for the parents because you can’t have eyes on them all the time. But living on the highway, you just have to be careful.

“Some kids are just runners. At least with the traffic lights there people will slow down.”

The shocking footage comes following an incident in August where two toddlers were filmed at a busy main road after making a get away from a Blair Athol childcare centre. The heart-stopping incident was captured on dashcam and showed one of the young children standing on the footpath and the other walking into traffic.

The childcare operator apologised to the families of the children involved at the time of the incident and stated they would be fully co-operating with the regulator.
