A cyclist has died a month after he was hit by a train while automatic safety gates and signal lights were not activated at North Adelaide.

The West Lakes man, 64, was riding his bike across the tracks at the newly reopened Gawler line about 5.30pm on Thursday, June 23, when he was hit.

He was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he underwent surgery, but died from his injuries a month later on Sunday.

Police are preparing a report for the Coroner.

At the time of the crash, Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said while the maze pedestrian crossing was constructed, the gates weren’t activated.

A spokesman for the Department of Transport said that signalling design works are currently underway and the crossing is expected to be activated with gates that automatically close when trains approach by early 2023.

The crossing, which reopened as a “passive crossing” on May 9, “meets all required safety standards”.

A government spokesperson said they were sorry to hear of the man’s death.

“The government has implemented an education campaign around rail safety. This includes media and social media promotion, safety messaging on screens at rail stations and customer service officers providing safety information directly to passengers at key locations across the network,” they said.

“While the program schedule for this pedestrian crossing is to be operational by early 2023, the department is doing everything possible to deliver the operation of the new activated gates and lights as soon as practicably possible.”

They said all crossings on the Gawler line opened for pedestrian use met “all required railway safety standards”.

Former trauma doctor Dr Bill Griggs was one of the first people on the scene to provide assistance to the man.

Dr Griggs said he was waiting on the other side of the tracks when the incident occurred.
