CONSTRUCTION work on what will become Adelaide’s tallest building will begin in the new year, after the state’s planning authority gave the project the green light.

The Development Assessment Commission on Wednesday approved the Kyren Group’s plan to build a 34-storey, 134m-high skyscraper at 11-27 Frome St.

The building will include a hotel, student accommodation, residential and serviced apartments, a cafe and car parking.

It will be 2m taller than the city’s existing tallest structure, the Westpac building.

Dubbed “Frome Central”, the development will mean Adelaide comedy club The Rhino Room and its sister venues, Urban Cow Studio and The Howling Owl, will be kicked out of their premises and the building will be demolished.

Kyren Group founder and managing director Theo Samaras said the project “fits perfectly with the vibrancy of the East End of Adelaide and will deliver a landmark development to the CBD”.

“It is important to contribute to the CBD with high-quality projects like this one that, for up to three years, will provide many hundreds of jobs and be an enormous boost to businesses in the area,” he said.

“With all the activity in this end of town, this development will truly complement the businesses and cultural activities in the area, and give people living or working in the homes and businesses the best of everything on their doorstep.”

Mr Samaras said construction would begin in the new year.
