Construction on Main South Road duplication between Aldinga and Seaford to begin in 2019

WORK on duplicating a 10km stretch of Main South Rd finally has a start-date and half of the 165 jobs it will create will come from Adelaide’s south.

THE duplication of a 10km stretch of Main South Rd will start from 2019, which will improve safety and traffic flow according to the Transport Minister.

The State Government committed to the upgrade in the State Budget, and on Thursday said it would create 165 jobs over three years.

The project will require the Government to acquire land to widen the road by about 30m.

Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said talks on acquisitions would begin in coming weeks but homeowners would be paid market value for their properties, plus “disturbance costs”.

The $305 million duplication will cover 10km from Aldinga to Seaford.

Construction will begin in 2019.

The government has set a target to hire half the 165 extra workers from Adelaide’s southern suburbs.

About 17,000 motorists use Main South Rd each day.

The upgrade was made a priority because there have been 77 crashes — including one fatality — on the road between 2010 and last year.

Opposition transport spokesman David Pisoni said the project would not create any new jobs for at least three years.

“I’ve got some advice for the Premier — ‘get on with it’,” he said.
