The completion of a non-stop $15b South Rd is a step closer, with the State Government unveiling a second purpose-built precinct ahead of construction starting on the project’s third set of tunnels.
The Central North Construction Precinct will house the Torrens to Darlington Project’s third tunnel boring machine, which will be constructed and launched to build the twin 2.2km tunnels.
The tunnels will run between James Congdon Drive and the existing motorway south of Grange Rd once completed.
Construction has already started on the Richmond-based precinct, with crews beginning preliminary work on diaphragm walls that will form a deep concrete pit – called a launch box.
The 38m-deep walls will be constructed one at a time to form a trench, where the boring machine will be assembled and then begin evacuating the tunnels.
Nine, 14m-tall silos have also been installed at the precinct to hold bentonite slurry, a wet clay that is pumped into the trenches to ensure ground stability.
More than 500 workers are tipped to work at the Central North site during peak construction.
The boring machines are being manufactured in Germany and China, before arriving in Adelaide later this year.
Work is already underway to allow the first two TBMs to be launched on the Southern Tunnels, with the evacuation to start late next year.
“The establishment of the Central North Construction Precinct is a significant milestone in creating a non-stop South Road that will ease congestion, improve safety and create more connected communities,” Acting Premier Susan Close said.
“Every step forward on the River Torrens to Darlington Project brings South Australians closer to a more modern transport network that strengthen our state and serve our community for generations to come.”
