Construction has begun on the new $8.5m West Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

The project is due to be finished in August 2023, and has been funded by federal, state, and local government as well as Surf Life Saving SA.

Surf Life Saving SA’s project officer John Kantilaftas said the project is going smoothly with the old club now demolished.

“We’re looking forward to it, it’s going to be an iconic structure in that corner at the end of West Beach Road. It’ll be an iconic little building, very much community focused,” Mr Kantilaftas said.

“The design was very important, it took into the considerations of the community, so that’s why we haven’t extended it to any higher than the old one was.”

Architects of the project, Walter Brooke, said Partek were the main contractors and are preparing for the substructure.

Most of the development was below the ground with some structural piles engineered to a depth of 13m below ground level.

“The building is designed to provide a community gathering place, that is a functional landmark for safety and recuse and is accessible by all,” Associate director of Walter Brooke, Carolyn Oades, said.

President of West Beach SLSC, Peter Zuill, said he was excited for the new club which would feature more storage areas, change rooms, a gym, a cafe, and a bar function area upstairs.

“We’ve been very successful in the past 10 years in providing a good area for the community to come and meet, and the new club rooms upstairs will provide that going forward,” he said.

Mr Zuill said the club had about 700 members, and the new club opening next year would only attract more.

The West Beach club was the final one to be upgraded within the City of Charles Sturt as part of the Plexus program, which outlined a development program for surf life saving facilities in SA and was commissioned in 2002 by Surf Life Saving South Australia.
