Half of Adelaide’s O-Bahn bus track will be closed into next week for repairs after a bizarre accident sparked commuter chaos on Tuesday morning.
Emergency services crews attended the scene after the outbound bus went off the tracks at the Klemzig Interchange around 7.45am this morning.
A crane was called in to help retrieve the bus, which toppled after driving through a large puddle in wet conditions.
The operation to pull it back on track was expected to take hours, however, the Department of Infrastructure and Transport said repairs to the track could take several days longer.
“Due to damage that occurred today, the section of the O-Bahn track between Klemzig and Paradise will remain closed into next week while repairs are undertaken,” a DIT spokesman said.
“It will remain closed for outbound buses (towards Tea Tree Plaza) and buses will continue to detour via the road network. No stops are being missed. Citybound O-Bahn buses remain unaffected.”
Vision from the crash also shows a large plume of smoke going into the air after the bus slammed into a guide rail.
The driver of the bus was not injured and there were no passengers on board at the time.
Adelaide Metro have launched an investigation into the crash, with engineers on site to assess the damage to both the vehicle and the track.
The outbound track is expected to remain closed between Klemzig and Paradise interchanges.
Replacement buses will be in place to pick up affected passengers.
South Aussies have been quick to react to the incident, which is the latest in a string of crashes on the iconic busway.
One social media user said “Just waiting for a mate”, while another said “Can’t park there”.
It came at the same time as multiple multi-vehicle crashes on Adelaide roads.
