An Adelaide Hills winery is seeking to expand its site by building a modern restaurant to host up to 200 people for weekend functions.

Cobb’s Hill Estate at Oakbank submitted its application to the Adelaide Hills Council earlier this year to construct a building for guests to experience further food and wine experiences at the site for occasions such as weddings.

The new building is largely a glass structure, with steps leading up to the building, and an arched rooftop made of wood and would be located at their Swamp Rd property.

The large property already features grazing cattle, a small motel for six guests, and a cellar door.

In the building application, Gregg Jenkins of Heynen Planning Consultants said the applicant advised on catastrophic fire days or when a bushfire is active in the area the facility would close.

“I am aware that this is common practice for events within high risk bushfire areas, while all potential clients will be made aware of the policies regarding cancellations as a result of catastrophic fire risk days, or when a bushfire is active within the area,” Mr Jenkins said.

The heritage of Cobbs Hill Estate dates back to 1854, where pastures for Cobb and Co horses were housed – employed for pulling stagecoaches through the Adelaide Hills from 1857.

There are currently 10 vineyards planted at the 100ha property which makes sauvignon blanc, riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot gris, pinot noir and Shiraz.

The cellar door opened in December 2017.

Mr Jenkins said the new development would assist in the long term viability of the site and produce more opportunity for people to enjoy the wine.

“More generally, Cobbs Hill seeks to provide a tourism opportunity within the Adelaide Hills,” he said.
