A Christian Brothers College student on the brink of death after being struck on the head during hammer throw practice in September continues to “defy the odds” in hospital as he strives towards making a remarkable recovery.
Students from the college were in athletics training on September 5 at St Albans Reserve, in Clearview, when the 13-year-old boy, named Javale, was wounded.
He was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to Women’s and Children’s Hospital where he continues to recover.
The hammer throw challenges athletes to swing and launch a steel ball from a tether as far as possible, with the “hammer” generally weighing 7.2kg for men.
Christian Brothers College principal David Johnston provided a promising update on Javale’s condition today.
“He is defying the odds, the powers of prayer have been so wonderful,” Mr Johnston said.
“Javale is now able to sit up in bed and we will continue to pray for him.”
CBC is also planning an auction to help raise funds towards the boy’s recovery.
“In relation to Javale, the CBC is going to run a silent auction on November 1 … there’s about 25 excellent prizes there with reserves,” Mr Johnston said.
“If we can successfully auction those gifts we will raise a considerable amount of money that will go towards a fund for Javale.
“In addition to that we will have the option of people to donate directly into a fund to support Javale.”
Last month, Mr Johnston said the school continued to investigate the circumstances leading up to the incident.
“One of our Year 7 students was involved in a very unfortunate accident during athletics training at St Albans Reserve and is currently in critical condition,” Mr Johnston said.
“The accident is under ongoing investigation, with all staff and students who were present assisting in the process.
“We have arranged for our school counsellors and additional support personnel to provide guidance and emotional support for both students and staff as we navigate through this difficult time.”
The school will release further details of the auction on their social media channels in the coming weeks.
