An infant is fighting for life in hospital with critical injuries after a horrifying afternoon plunge in their pram in the Fleurieu Peninsula.
The baby, who is believed to be younger than a year-old, mysteriously fell from a height at Mt Compass, 60km south of Adelaide, just before 3pm on Wednesday.
Witnesses, including relatives, watched in horror as the infant, whose gender was not released, suffered extensive injuries in what is believed to have been an accidental fall while in their pram.
Multiple paramedics, including a group of specialist emergency MedStar doctors, and CFS officers raced to the country town following frantic triple-zero calls.
When they arrived to the accident scene, near Mount Compass Oval, it was said to have been immediately obvious it was a major emergency.
Authorities believe it was a tragic accident with no suspicious circumstances.
Crews worked for several hours to stabilise the child, before a MedSTAR helicopter flew them to the Women’s and Children’s hospital in Adelaide.
They are believed to have suffered critical injuries.
Family are maintaining a bedside vigil.
Despite several schools and playgrounds located in the area it is unclear exactly how the child was injured and where the incident precisely occurred.
An SA Ambulance spokeswoman said: “A very small child was involved in a fall.”
She said the baby was flown to the WCH.
An SA Health spokeswoman had no immediate condition update.
