South Australians still grieving the loss of Charlie Stevens can farewell him tonight, in a funeral service expected to be attended by thousands. Here’s how you can attend or watch.

SA Police Commissioner’s heartbreaking tribute to son killed in car crash

A public twilight service honouring the young life of Charlie Stevens will be held tonight, Thursday November 30 – with thousands of mourners expected.

Charlie – the youngest son of SA’s Police Commissioner Grant Stevens – died on November 18 after an alleged hit-run at Schoolies shocked the state.

The service is open to the public, starting at 7pm in the William Magarey Room at Adelaide Oval.

SA Police Chief Inspector Col Cunningham told The Advertiser all were welcome to come and pay their respects at what will be the only funeral service for the Commissioner’s son.

The service is also set to be live streamed for those who cannot attend.

“The Magarey room has 800 seats but the crowd will spill out to the grandstands and the service will be played on the big screen,” he said.

“We aren’t completely sure how many will attend but we are expecting lots of members of the public to come … everyone is welcome.”

In lieu of flowers, the Stevens family has asked mourners to consider donating to the Operation Flinders Foundation – of which Mr Stevens is a board member – in their son’s memory.

On Tuesday morning, SA Police released a tribute online and in the print edition of The Advertiser.

“After the recent tragic loss of Charlie Stevens – the SAPOL Executive Leadership Team and all SAPOL employees send our most heartfelt condolences to Commissioner Grant Stevens; his wife Emma; their children Dylan, Sophie, Josh and Tom; family, friends, teammates, school colleagues and all who knew Charlie in some way,” it reads.

“There are simply no words to describe the grief being felt at this time.

“The acting Commissioner Linda Williams would like to sincerely thank all those who have sent flowers, messages of condolence and other tributes to SAPOL for the Stevens family.

“SAPOL is a large family and we will always support each other in times of need such as these.”
