We all already knew, now the rest of Australia is catching up. Adelaide and the Hills have been voted the best area to live.

Strong rankings for environment, safety, sports, affordable housing and dining have propelled inner Adelaide the number-one status for Australian urban living.

A study by market research firm Ipsos pitted central Adelaide and the Hills against some of the most well-publicised desirable locations in Australia, such as Sydney’s northern beachs, which ranked eighth.

Sydney dominated the top ten with three other locations also voted in; Sutherland in second spot, the city and inner-south at sixth, as well as North Sydney and Hornsby, seventh.

Inner-city Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane ranked third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Ipsos public affairs director Stuart Clark said 14,010 interviews were conducted via an online panel between July 6 and 31 this year, weighted by where respondents lived.

“Our ongoing polling has shown major changes in Australian priorities during the pandemic,’’ he said.

“Our regular Ipsos Issues Monitor shows that the economy, jobs and healthcare have all rocketed back to the top of the list as most important issues facing the nation.

“However, it’s interesting to see that the fundamental values that Australians look for in a place to live haven’t changed.

“Safety, affordable housing and health services are the most important features that Australians look for.”

The Life in Australia 2020 ‘Liveability Index’ ranked Adelaide at 71.5 – narrowly beating Sutherland on 71.2 – and it was the only metropolitan location in the country that rated above average across all 16 liveability measures.

None of South Australia’s regional areas were rated in the top ten, with NSW Murraylands taking number one spot, and the other nine by four Queensland locations, three in Victoria, one in WA and a second NSW area.
