The demolition of a decaying beachfront house at Carrickalinga has been given the go ahead but uncertainty remains around the timing of the work.

Yankalilla Council has approved the razing of the unfinished three-storey property at 9 Gold Coast Drive, pictured, which has blighted Carrickalinga’s picturesque esplanade of the popular holiday haven.

But Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, which took control of the property from businessman Stephen Marks last year, won’t say when the work will start, citing privacy reasons.

The news has been welcomed by residents who have been lobbying Bendigo and Adelaide Bank to reveal their plans for the building after it too back control of the property from businessman Stephen Marks last year.

Aleksander Sapic, of demolition company DeJay Contracting, told The Advertiser that he was advised this week to “hold off” on the job.

He said he was given no reason.

Bendigo and Adelaide Bank public relations boss Simon Fitzgerald said “privacy reasons” prevented him saying when the work would start and what the reason was for the delay.

The bank has used privacy repeatedly to refrain from discussing its intentions for the property.

Carrickalinga Ratepayers Association president Kim Baker said the community wanted the work to be done as quickly as possible.

Beachfront blocks of land at Carrickalinga are presently being advertised for more than $1 million.

Construction of the house came to a halt five years ago after the council, discovered it had been built taller than approved, triggering a lengthy court dispute.

The council voted in February last year to sell the house over a $26,000 rates debt. The bank then moved in to repossess the house.

Mr Marks is former operator of the Marina St Vincent at Wirrina. This week he handed back control of this week after the State Government terminated his lease for failing to pay a $270,000 dredging bill.
