At least four out of five Australian car manufacturing workers retrenched following the closure of Holden, Ford and Toyota plants are back working.

However, at least 41 per cent of those are casual workers, a report commissioned by the Federal Government reveals.

About 14,000 workers, including those in the supply chain, lost their jobs when car manufacturing plants, including one at Elizabeth, closed between 2016 and 2017.

Employment Minister, Senator Michaelia Cash, pictured, says “decisive action” lead to 82 per cent of workers in the market employed again.

“The lessons this transition provide a best practice blueprint for employers and government on how to support workers impacted by restructuring,” Senator Cash said.

The report shows a third of employees found jobs in manufacturing, 13 per cent in transport and nine per cent in construction. Four per cent started their own business.
