Severe weather warning issued by Bureau of Meteorology for Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula

Heavy rainfall is falling on the Yorke Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula, with a severe weather warning issued for areas hit by flooding three months ago.

Eyre Peninsula and Yorke Peninsula residents have been warned to expect thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

The Bureau of Meteorology on Sunday afternoon issued a severe weather warning for the Eastern Eyre Peninsula, parts of the Yorke Peninsula, Flinders Ranges and Mid North..

“A humid east to northeast flow is combining with an upper trough to produce a cloud band across the central parts of South Australia,” it said.

“Thunderstorms within the cloud band may result in heavy rainfall this afternoon and evening.”

BOM said severe thunderstorms were likely to produce heavy rainfall the could lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Maitland, Cleve and Kadina.

Parts of Upper Eyre Peninsula and Yorke Peninsula experienced heavy rainfall in January, with flooding causing millions of dollars of damage to roads and other instrastructure around Kimba.

BOM duty forecaster Simon Timcke said the severe weather had developed through the western part of the Yorke Peninsula, through the Flinders Ranges and parts of the Eyre Peninsula.

“We can expect heavy rain west and north of Adelaide,” he said.

Mr Timcke said the rain was not expected to reach metropolitan Adelaide.

“Adelaide should be dry for the dawn service, but light showers may happen Monday afternoon,” he said.

“We will be closely monitoring the West Coast over the next couple of days.”
