Almost 600 Border Collies gather in bid to Break World Record

NO, you weren’t barking mad if you saw more than 500 dogs on Willaston Oval on Sunday.

The pack of pooches was there to break an unofficial world record and help raise about $6000 for charity.

And they did just that.

The Border Collie Owners of South Australia (BCOSA) organised the event in a bid to smash TV veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren’s 2013 record of having the most border collies in one place at one time.

Dr Warren managed to attract 503 dogs to her event but the BCOSA group has now beaten that record by 31 dogs after 534 border collies hung out on Willaston Oval, even paw-sing for a photograph to mark the occasion.

The record remains “unofficial” because Guinness World Records does not accept breed-specific records.

Organiser Yvonne McGrath was “absolutely rapt” with the turnout and the behaviour of the four-legged participants.

“I couldn’t believe how good they were,” she said.

The event included almost 30 stalls as well as activities and demonstrations.

“One of the girls did pilates with her dog … that was good,” Mr McGrath said.

Manny Mendes, of Gawler, took his wife Nikki and their nine-week-old baby Rylee to see the spectacle.

“We wanted to go down and see all the dogs just hanging out (because) it’s pretty cool to have so many dogs together,” the 41-year-old said. “It was really awesome actually. They pretty much filled up the oval.”

Money raised will go to Guardian Angel Animal Rescue, SA Dog Rescue and Scruffer Lovers.
