Boothby MP Nicolle Flint elected president of SA Liberal Women’s Council

Outgoing Boothby MP Nicolle Flint has vowed to help more women get into politics after being elected president of the SA Liberal Women’s Council.

'Fairness' and 'inclusivity' incompatible in sports: Flint

Getting more women into parliament is at the centre of outgoing MP Nicolle Flint’s agenda in her new role.

Ms Flint was elected president of the SA Liberal Women’s Council on Monday night, trumpeted as a huge win by the Right faction.

She immediately vowed to advocate fiercely for women in politics.

“This role gives me the opportunity to implement in South Australia the work I have been doing federally, to see more women in parliament and in leadership roles in the Liberal Party, especially at our volunteer membership level,” she said.

“We will engage in policy debates that affect women, and play an active role in the upcoming elections for the Marshall government and Morrison government to see state and federal Liberal governments returned.”

Ms Flint will quit federal parliament at the next election. She holds SA’s only marginal seat of Boothby.

“As the retiring member for Boothby … I know how to campaign and how to support our candidates and marginal seat holders,” she said.

The Liberal Right faction also won two vice-president positions. Having gained 11 delegates in a 220-member state council, emboldened conservatives are talking up their chances of seizing control of the party’s state executive at the annual general meeting in mid-September.

A Liberal conservative accused Steven Marshall’s government of mobilising grassroots Liberals by going too far with social reforms, particularly abortion and euthanasia laws.

Conservatives have been angered by both arms of the faction lacking a minister in cabinet, after Stephan Knoll’s departure last year.

“It shouldn’t be a surprise with the conservative wing … completely marginalised by the Premier, that grassroots members are fighting back,” the Liberal source said.
