Bob Day: ‘If investor revives company I may not quit’

SA SENATOR Bob Day says he may not quit politics after all if a new buyer can be found for his beleaguered company.

Day to remain in Senate for rest of year

SA SENATOR Bob Day says he may not quit politics after all if a new buyer can be found for his beleaguered company.

Senator Day announced last week he would have to resign because of the liquidation of his Adelaide-based building empire, but later indicated a sale could potentially allow him to avoid bankruptcy and remain in the senate.

Today the Family First Senator released a statement clarifying his position: “If new investment revives the company, if houses are being completed and trade contractors and others are being paid, then I may continue as a Senator,” the statement said. (Read the full statement below.)

“If not, my resignation will proceed and I will devote myself to assisting those affected by the group’s closure.”

The Advertiser today revealed that Homestead Homes, the South Australian arm of Senator Bob Day’s failed empire, owes at least $5 million to predominantly SA creditors, according to documents he has lodged with the company’s liquidators.

The creditors’ list, released by liquidators on Tuesday, comes as a party source said an announcement about the potential sale of Senator Day’s parent company Home Australia and its national subsidiaries could happen on Friday.

Senator Day said in the statement he would attend the Senate on Monday, November 7 “to ensure that South Australia and the Family First Party has an active vote in the Senate for that sitting week”.

“The votes are tight on the marriage plebiscite and ABCC (Australian Building and Construction Commission) — and I support both.”

“The backpacker tax must be fixed before the end of the sitting year, and I want to ensure the tax rate is satisfactory to farmers and the hospitality industry alike.”

He finished the statement with an apology for “the anguish this situation is causing many people”.
