SPENDING April Fool’s Day at the office? It doesn’t have to be boring. Thanks to a Reddit post, here are a bunch of office pranks that aren’t too hard to pull — and probably won’t get you into trouble*.
*Probably.
The mouse
There are plenty of ways to mess with an colleague’s mouse. Change the speed to the slowest setting. Unplug it, switch which button does what, or stick a small bit of Post-it under the sensor. Even better — if you sit near enough, plug in a small wireless mouse dongle into the back. Then you can sit back and take control with your own mouse.
The air horn
The computer
This works well with those who struggle a little with computer understanding — make a screenshot of their desktop, move everything on their desktop to a folder and make the screenshot the new desktop picture. This is extra funny if you include a new folder with a rude or strange name on the screenshot. You can also simply turn off the show desktop folders option in View.
The balloon office
The birthday
Put a cake in the fridge with someone’s name on it (and add on a bunch of years). Then watch as they become slowly more and more irate as everyone wishes them a happy birthday. Works better if you use a common name. At some point, you also get to eat the cake.
For the self-absorbed boss
The callback
Leave a fake please-call-me-back phone message for a co-worker — (real) examples include phone number of a funeral company with a missed call from a Myra Maines, or a phone number for the local zoo, with message from Harry Bayer, Mr Behr or Mr C Lyones. (NOTE — yes, this was also stolen from The Wire, too)
The Post-it car
The coffee mug
You’ll need a duplicate of a co-workers’ mug, but this is gold. Simply freeze a coffee (or whatever drink they have) and then when they’ve got one on their desk, wait for your chance and when they’re not looking, swap the mugs over.
