The faces of the 44 lives lost on SA roads in 2024

A man who died after his car slammed into a tree at Myponga has been remembered as a “good bloke, colleague, and an exceptional cabbie.”

Seaford Rise man and beloved Suburban Taxis cabbie Brenton, 75, is one of two men who lost their lives on South Australian roads on Tuesday night.

Fellow cabbie Ben Bernhardt described his friend as kind, caring and always up for a laugh.

“When I was driving cabs, before I had a stroke in 2018, we’d always communicate to find out how our nights were going, what location we were at, and if it was quiet. We’d meet up at a rank and have a chinwag and a smoke,” he told The Advertiser.

In a tribute posted to Facebook, Mr Bernhardt said “the cab scene will never be the same. RIP my friend.”

Police were called to Main South Rd with reports a white Suzuki sedan had struck a tree, then caught alight at around 9pm Tuesday.

The Seaford Rise man was the sole occupant of the car and died at the scene, making him the 54th life lost on SA roads this year.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze with Major Crash officers called to examine the circumstances.

Authorities shut Main South Rd between Inman Valley Rd and Forktree Rd, and traffic was diverted into Victor Harbor Road, as investigations were underway.

Roads have since reopened.
