A B-double trailer carting beer to the state’s Riverland region has been destroyed along with its golden cargo.

SA Country Fire Service crews were called to a truck fire in Cobdogla about 5.30pm Tuesday.

The 16 firefighters on five trucks arrived on scene to find the quick-thinking B-double truck driver had detached the impacted trailer that was on fire from the prime mover and first trailer.

The second trailer was extensively damaged along with its beer load, with an estimated damage bill of $500,000.

The prime mover and other trailer were not damaged.

The Stuart Highway was reduced to one lane until the road was cleared of debris.
