Australian Geoscience Council Convention has pop-up creche to support scientists with young children
A POP-UP crèche at the Adelaide Convention Centre is a practical way to ensure parents of young children can take part in an important scientific meeting.
RATHER than put their careers on hold, a group of parents are thrilled to be taking part in the Australian Geoscience Council Convention this week – knowing their little ones are in safe hands.
Its being made possible by a pop-up crèche at the Adelaide Convention Centre, which is operated and managed independently by Hessel Group.
Exploration geologist Christine Lawley of Metalzoic Geological Consulting said it was “amazing” to attend the conference with her daughters Bethany, 3 and Cally, 1.
“This is the first time I’ve ever had this opportunity and I jumped at it. I have two young children so over the last three years it’s been tricky to go to things, for some conferences I've popped in for an hour or two and paid for a full day ticket,” said Ms Lawley.
President of the Australian Geoscience Council, Dr Bill Shaw, said it was an Australian first.
“It was really important to allow people with young families, so early career geoscientists, to be able to have their kids looked after for sessions they might want to attend, to maximise the potential of developing their careers,” he said.
