A fashion retailer with serious financial problems has quit a new agency established by the Adelaide City Council to market the Adelaide CBD.

Australian Fashion Labels director Dean Flintoft tendered his resignation from the Adelaide Economic Development Agency on Friday morning.

The agency began operating last week with a budget of $7.6m, with its board due to meet for the first time next month.

Mr Flintoft was last month announced as one of the agency’s six inaugural directors just weeks before his company was placed into voluntary administration.

The other directors chosen by a council evaluation panel were property owner Steve Maras, small bar operator Oliver Brown, real estate industry leader Fairlie Delbridge, developer Craig Holden and businessman Manuel Ortigosa.

Chairwoman Nikki Govan confirmed Mr Flintoft had decided to resign to “focus on his own business affairs”

“I have received and accepted the resignation of Dean Flintoft as a member of the AEDA board,” she said.

“The vacancy will be filled in due course.”

Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor, who also is on the board, said the council was examining its options to replace Mr Flintoft.

“While it’s unfortunate that Dean has resigned, we received a significant number of applications for the board from high-quality candidates,” she said.

“I’m certain we will be able to quickly fill the vacancy with a talented individual who will add value to the AEDA Board.”

The agency was set up by the council to take over its marketing, sponsorship and event management activities.

It also has replaced the Rundle Mall Authority and will receive the separate rate revenue collected from property owners in the shopping precinct.

Many of its 32 employees were previously working on the council, including chief executive Ian Hill.
