A major disability provider has been hit with sanctions after inspectors found that residents were not receiving adequate levels of care at an Adelaide facility.

Minda Nursing Home at North Brighton was inspected by the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency last month.

On Thursday, Minda announced that the inspection “found that residents were not being provided with care to the appropriate Accreditation Standards”.

The inspectors found that there were compliance problems with both the health and personal care of residents as well as behavioural management at the facility.

In response to the findings, the Health Department imposed a series of sanctions on the home to make urgent improvements to its standards of care.

Minda has since appointed an external administrator and adviser with a specialist knowledge of residential aged care.

The finding prompted the company to roll out a $300,000 upgrade to the home’s facilities, in addition to a “comprehensive training program” for relevant staff.

Minda is one of 14 facilities across the state to have current notices of non-compliance from the aged-care quality watchdog.

The home offers 54 beds across six wings in a variety of accommodation styles.

The sanctions come just over a week before a preliminary hearing of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety is held in Adelaide.

The hearing will be held on January 18 and follows the announcement that Adelaide would host the commission because of its reputation as “ground zero” in Australia’s aged-care crisis.

In 2017, the closure of an Oakden aged-care home following reports of patient abuse and horrific conditions sparked a statewide scandal and close scrutiny of the aged-care industry.
