As brave firefighters attend to blazes still burning across the state, a sigh of relief can be made with a cooler New Year’s Day forecast on the cards.
South Australians will brace for another burst of heat towards the end of the week as temperatures creep up to 41C by the weekend.
But a pleasantly mild forecast has been predicted for New Year’s Day, with official temperatures from the Bureau to reach a maximum of 29C and a minimum of 13C. The milder weather is the result of a high pressure system moving across the state.
“There’s a high pressure system moving in south of The Bight on New Year’s Day,” said Brett Gage, senior forecaster for the Bureau of Meteorology.
Very hot conditions are still predicted for the state’s far north on New Year’s Day.
And we can expect another burst of heat by this weekend, Mr Gage said.
“We’re going to get very hot conditions return to the state from Friday to the weekend.”
Temperatures will reach 39C by Friday, 41C on Saturday and then back to 39C for Sunday. The cold front will hit Adelaide on Monday afternoon.
A strong wind warning was issued for the upper south east coast for Thursday which will keep crews “on the lookout” for fires.
“Winds are always a concern but they aren’t any fires there (in the upper south east) at the moment,” a CFS spokeswoman said,
Crews hope to contain the fires currently burning in Cudlee Creek and Kangaroo Island by the time high temperatures peak at the end of the week.
In addition to tomorrow’s wind warning comes chances of dry thunderstorms across large parts of the state on the weekend and following on until Monday, Mr Gage said.
Low intensity heatwaves are declared for Thursday in the Riverland, Mid North, Flinders, West Coast and Eastern Eyre Peninsula, with a severe heatwave predicted for the North East pastoral district and an extreme warning for the north west pastoral district.
