Are you stumped by this online quiz which tests your road rule knowledge?

The 15 toughest questions in the RAA’s learner driver test are failed by around half of all aspiring L-platers. Can you beat them? Take the quiz here.

Tricky road rules you're probably breaking

A majority of quiz participants are failing simple road rule questions involving traffic lights, give way signs, school crossings and alcohol, the RAA has revealed.

RAA senior manager of safety and infrastructure Charles Mountain has urged drivers to take this online quiz to test their knowledge and help them become better motorists.

Mr Mountain said more than 14,000 people had taken RAA’s online road rules multiple-choice quiz this year and the rate of errors was concerning.

“For example 47 per cent of people said you must always stop at a Give Way sign while another 5 per cent said you must slow down,’’ Mr Mountain said.

“But only 48 per cent answered that question correctly, that drivers must slow down or stop only when necessary to give way to other vehicles.’’

Mr Mountain said confusion was also common regarding U-turns, as 49 per cent wrongly said they were permitted at traffic lights with a green right-hand turn arrow.

And another 9 per cent said U-turns were allowed on freeways.

The test is most commonly used by people studying to pass their L-plate theory exams, either teens or new arrivals.

But Mr Mountain said also concerning was that older more experienced drivers doing the online test to brush up on their knowledge were commonly failing.

The most commonly failed question is about overtaking another car on a suburban street, with only 37.3 per cent of people getting this correct.

Also, only 49 per cent of drivers knew what to do correctly when faced with a yellow flashing traffic light.

Participants had a much greater quiz success rate regarding drivers using a handheld mobile phone – 98 per cent correctly answered it was illegal.

More than 97 per cent also knew that drivers and passengers must always wear a properly fitting seatbelt.

Mr Mountain said some road rules, like recent changes to cyclist rules, were often updated and it was important we keep up to date.

“Rules can also be forgotten, or we can pick up bad habits, so it’s important all road users know what the rules are to avoid potentially causing confusion, traffic congestion, conflict or collisions,’’ he said.

More than 300 quiz questions about SA road rules in the RAA stockpile are regularly rotated among the 42 published by the organisation online, to avoid repetition.

Mr Mountain said obeying the rules was as important as knowing them, given that despite common knowledge about some rules, almost 7500 drivers were fined for illegal use of a mobile phone and another 2526 were caught not wearing a seatbelt last year.

“All road users need to take responsibility to reduce road trauma,’’ he said.
