A border collie has been reunited with his owner after a 12 month long adventure on the road.
Appy the dog disappeared from Adelaide a year ago, but turned up in Morgan this week where a Mid-Murray Council officer found him.
The council’s mayor, Dave Burgess, commended the owners for microchipping their beloved pet.
“With the old system it would have been extremely difficult to find Appy’s owner, as he travelled 150 kilometres from his home council across several different council boundaries,” Mayor Burgess said.
Mid-Murray Council were able to locate Appy’s owners through Dogs and Cats Online, the South Australian statewide register for recording microchip, desexing and breeder information.
“Dogs and Cats online has encouraged cross-council collaboration and makes it easy to find owners because you only need to search the one register,” he said.
Microchip and desexing as well as breeder registration laws were made mandatory back in 2018 and are administered by local council.
Dog and Cat Management Board chairman David Parkin said in the first 24 hours of opening that register they received 26,000 dog and cat renewals, with 95 per cent of the owners completing renewals online themselves.
“It’s great to see the benefits of those laws like Appy being reunited and the uptake of registrations in dogs and cats online,” he said.
“These laws help more lost dogs and cats return to their owners, promote responsible pet ownership and improve council services for dog and cat owners.”
Appy’s owners were not available for comment.
Dog and cat registrations must be paid by August 31.
