A grandfather has been killed after his go-kart left the track and crashed into a truck at a Riverland race meet.
Anthony “Tony” Hucks, 74, was competing at Sunday’s Riverland Championship hosted by the Loxton Kart Club when he sustained serious injuries and died at the scene.
It is understood the elderly Loxton man was racing on the 330m dirt track in the 125 RL class.
Mr Hucks was one of five children born to well-known Loxton couple Wanda and Allan Hucks, with the family making their mark on the go-karting circuit.
He is understood to be a second-generation go-kart driver, following in his late father’s footsteps, while his son Tim and grandson Tyler are also involved in the sport.
Punters at the local pub, Loxton Club, remembered Mr Hucks as a regular.
Emergency services were called to the Karoonda Highway track, 8km out of town, just after 11.30am on Sunday, following reports that a go-kart and truck had collided.
The water truck, understood to be used to water down the track between races, was parked on the side of the track, according to 7NEWS.
SA Police said a report would be prepared for the coroner after the go-kart being driven by Mr Hucks, who was participating in a race, left the track and collided with a truck.
Riverland police and crime scene investigators attended the scene, with officers investigating the circumstances of Mr Hucks’ death.
They will also investigate if a medical episode was a contributing factor.
Management at the Loxton Kart Club were unable to comment on the situation.
Its website says, “even the most experienced drivers will tell you the Loxton track is a challenging tack to get right”.
The club’s next race meet is scheduled for September 8, the KT Super Scramble, while the Junior Double Direction meet is organised for October 26.
Loxton Dirt Kart Club was formed in 1984 and has been the site of numerous karting events, including the Riverside karting championship held over two days at the weekend.
The first meeting was held in March 1985 with an estimated 1500 people attending.
It was considered a record for a dirt kart event, with a total of 166 nominations received across the 52 events.
