Nurse Consultant Jessica Rice has won the Premier’s Nursing and Midwifery Scholarship at the 2024 Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards.
Ms Rice, who works at the Central Adelaide Local Health Network, will visit lung cancer screening programs and nurse-led clinics within leading respiratory services in Canada and the United Kingdom.
The study tour will focus on cultural and accessibility considerations for developing services for rural and remote communities.
Fourteen individuals and teams were announced winners at the annual awards held on Friday night at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
Overall, there were 30 individual finalists and seven teams nominated for the awards.
The prestigious Excellence in Practice – Team Award went to two finalists: The Early Pregnancy Unit, Northern Adelaide Health Network and Let’s BRUNCH 24hrs a day – CALHN Surgery Programs 1|2|3 at Central Adelaide Local Health Network.
The former was recognised as providing South Australia’s only midwifery-led service that cares for complications such as pain and bleeding in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.
The service relieves stress and anxiety for new parents, providing empathetic, prompt and comprehensive care.
The Let’s BRUNCH 24hrs a day – CALHN Surgery Programs 1|2|3 was awarded for being an outstanding quality improvement initiative by nursing staff teams across surgical wards at Royal Adelaide Hospital and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Nursing teams focused on different care initiatives each week over six weeks, reducing hospital-acquired infections and improving the patient experience.
Health Minister Chris Picton said SA was fortunate to have world-class healthcare professionals who went above and beyond to provide quality care across the state’s hospitals, community, aged care and non-clinical services.
“They are truly the backbone of our health system and we are proud of the work they do,” Mr Picton said.
