Alifia Soeryo who died after being struck by a falling tree in the Adelaide Parklands has been remembered in a memorial service

A young woman who was struck and killed by a falling tree in the Adelaide Parklands has been remembered by family and friends.

Alifia Soeryo, who died after being struck by a falling tree in the Adelaide Parklands, has been remembered as “passionate”, “dedicated” and “outspoken” in a memorial service.

On Sunday, February 11 at 3pm, friends and family of the 22-year-old Indonesian international student assembled at the University of Adelaide soccer ground off Frome Rd, where on Monday a native gum suddenly fell over, and struck her.

Paramedics were unable to revive Ms Soeryo and she tragically died at the scene.

More than 100 people gathered at the site of the accident, still cordoned off, laying flower bouquets and sharing stories of a young woman who was studying a Masters of Media and had plans to work in the motorsport industry.

University friend Tim Do said her death had ultimately brought together people from different walks of life who all knew her.

In addition to being on the committee of the university’s Indonesian Society, she was also a member of the motorsport and cycling clubs, with many riding their bikes down in remembrance of her.

“She would always talk about the things you were interested in, so I just had no idea she had all these different facets to her,” Mr Do said.

“She drifted between lots of different groups, so the best thing we can do is just lean into this community that she’s left behind and wouldn’t have expected otherwise.

“Personally, I’m just learning to be more open and to be nice to others every day, and to take it all in when you can, because you just never know what’s around the corner.”

Jake Hermann, a colleague at the Adelaide University Motorsport Club, presented Ms Soeryo’s team cap to her mother, who flew in from Indonesia last week to mourn her daughter.

University of Adelaide deputy vice-chancellor Jennie Shaw also attended, describing Ms Soeryo as a “very high-achieving student” and promising that the university would support her family however possible.

“Every time one member of our university community dies, it’s such a terrible thing,” Ms Shaw said.

“It was such an unusual event, and I think it was just the wrong place and the wrong time - it could have happened to any of us.

“I think it is because part of the city, part of the University of Adelaide, it does hit home very hard for our community.”

A fundraiser to repatriate Ms Soeryo’s body and to cover funeral expenses has raised nearly $10,000 to date.
