Airbnb reviews have given an insight into what former opposition leader David Speirs did while on medical leave in the wake of the white powder scandal.

Former opposition leader David Speirs took road trips to Melbourne and the Victorian high country while he was on medical leave in the wake of the white powder scandal, according to his Airbnb profile.

Mr Speirs, who is now facing drug supply charges and has announced he will quit parliament, left reviews on the platform for accommodation in Port Fairy, Lorne and Bright.

He was glowing in his praise of the properties, which he described as private and peaceful.

In the week after footage of him appearing to snort a white powder was published by The Advertiser on September 9 – he claimed it was a deepfake – he left a review for Oak Moss cottage, located on a historic dairy farm in the Victorian coastal town of Port Fairy.

The property is available for rent this month at $230/night, with its location described as “a peaceful rural outlook”.

“Oak Moss is the perfect spot for a glass of wine and sunset gazing,” the listing says.

Mr Speirs said he stayed two nights at the property – “breaking a road trip between Adelaide and Melbourne”.

“The kitchen enabled me to cook meals there without needing to go out, and the bed was incredibly comfortable,” he wrote.

“The views out onto the rural landscape made it feel private, even though the accommodation is within the township of Port Fairy and I was able to walk down to the town centre for a coffee, etc, in the morning.”

He also left a review for The Studio – a French-inspired apartment at Lorne, another coastal town along the Great Ocean Road.

It is available for rent this month at $160/night and offers a private secluded garden with “wildlife in abundance”.

The hosts, Andrew and Cherie, were complimentary of Mr Speirs, who had visited for “an easy one night stay” and was “in and out with zero fuss”.

In his review, Mr Speirs said their apartment was “a great little pad in a beautiful location”.

At the end of September – around the same time he was arrested at Berri – Mr Speirs left a review for Westwood Lodge at Bright, about 320km northeast of Melbourne.

The lodge is available for $297 a night in October, requiring a two-night minimum stay, and features an “opulent” master bedroom and “enchanting” queen room.

Luxurious spa products are also provided for guests, along with “cloud-like bedding”, local coffee, specialty hot chocolates and organic teas.

Mr Speirs said he had travelled with his mother, and the lodge was “perfect for the two of us”.

“The property is within metres of the high street (but very quiet) and ideally placed as a launch pad to explore the beautiful Alpine region of Victoria,” he said.

“The beds were comfy and we felt a sense of peace there.”

Leah, the host of the property, said the pair had “left the lodge just as they found it”.

“Would welcome them back anytime!” she said.

Mr Speirs said in the days after the white powder video was published that he was feeling “exceptionally vulnerable and at risk” and would take a period of medical leave.

“I must take some time to focus on my own health and wellbeing as any other person should,” a statement said.

He said at the time he had left Adelaide but multiple colleagues said they were unaware of exactly where he had gone.

On Saturday, Mr Speirs, 39, confirmed his home had been raided and he had been arrested – and revealed he would resign from his role as MP for Black when parliament next sits later this month.

He has also suspended his Liberal Party membership but said he would fight to clear his name of any allegations while rebuilding himself over the coming months.

An SA Police statement said he had been charged with two counts of supplying a controlled substance between August 2 and 3 and on August 9.

He was given police bail to appear in court at a later date.

Mr Speirs’ Airbnb profile identifies him only as “David” and lists his work as with “Government of South Australia”.

“(I) love the great outdoors, national parks, hiking and enjoying nature,” it says.

Last year, The Advertiser revealed he had listed three of his 13 properties on the platform at a cost of up to $500 per night.

The three remain available for rent, with some nights now costing more than $600, and Mr Speirs has achieved the rating of “Superhost”.

He has been a host on the platform for 10 years and has collected 154 reviews from guests, with an impressive 4.81 star rating.

Mr Speirs has been contacted for comment.
