Adelaide’s traffic hot spots revealed in new Transport Department data

ADELAIDE has several stretches of roads notorious for their frequent traffic snarls. New data now sheds light on the busiest stretches of roads and intersections in South Australia. Tells us: Do you know of other horror spots?

THE 1km stretch of Main South Rd between Bedford Park and Clovelly Park has been ranked as the busiest thoroughfare in the state.

An average of 72,700 vehicles a day travel along the section of road, which has topped the 40 busiest road sections compiled by the Transport Department.

The department has also revealed the busiest intersection in the state is the junction of Port Wakefield Rd and Salisbury Hwy at Mawsons Lakes, where 113,500 vehicles travel each day.

The list that includes both inner city and outer suburb traffic hot spots has placed infrastructure funding and priorities under the spotlight.

Transport and infrastructure minister Stephen Mulligan said creating a non-stop north-south corridor from Gawler to Old Noarlunga was one of the state’s highest priority projects but required significant Federal Government funding.

“The Federal Government has already committed to partnering with South Australia to upgrade the full 78km within a decade,” Mr Mullighan said.

He said more than $2.5 billion of projects were currently underway on the north-south corridor and those projects, including the $896 million Torrens to Torrens project and the $620m Darlington Upgrade would improve traffic flows at many of the intersections.

These intersections included Port Wakefield Rd and Salisbury Hwy; Ayliffes, South, Main South and Shepherds Hill roads and Flinders Drv and Main South Rd.

RAA road safety manager Charles Mountain said the data for both intersections and roads highlighted South Rd, which included seven intersections on the lists, was a very busy corridor.

He said it was, therefore, important that the remaining sections of the north-south corridor be upgraded so that the full benefits of the Darlington Upgrade and the Torrens to Torrens sections could be realised when they were completed.

“As motorists would be well aware, many corridors are carrying high traffic volumes,” he said.

“The peak periods are longer and therefore there needs to be strategies in the short-term to ensure these roads can operate at their designed capacity.”

He said this included ensuring roadworks were not undertaken during busy times, enforcing clearways and no stopping areas and optimising traffic flow.
