ADELAIDE’S small-bar revolution has put our city on the hospitality map, as three local bar designs vie for accolades in this year’s Eat Drink Design Awards.

Pink Moon Saloon, BRKLYN and Mr Goodbar have today been shortlisted in Australia and New Zealand’s only hospitality design competition – the highest number for any single capital city.

Matiya Marovic of young SA design practice Sans-Arc designed two of the shortlisted bars – the NYC-inspired BRKLYN in Rundle St and the mountain hut-themed Pink Moon Saloon in Leigh St.

The latter was also yesterday named Bar of the Year by Gourmet Traveller and is in the running to win a 2016 Restaurant & Bar Design Award in London.

“It’s great to see Adelaide recognised,” Marovic said.

“The culture has gradually seeped over from Sydney and Melbourne, but being Adelaide our standard is higher by necessity. We produce quality not quantity because we don’t have the quantity of people.”

Whistle & Flute, another Sans-Arc project, is in the running for Best Cafe Design.

“It’s just a really nice pat on the back,” said Josh Baker, co-owner of Pink Moon Saloon and Whistle & Flute. “We’re not one for awards as such, we just want to serve good drinks and good food to good people - old-school hospitality. It’s bloody special though, we’re stoked, and we love the support we get from everyone.”

Mr Goodbar in Union St, by Studio Gram architects David Bickmore and Graham Charbonneau, is also shortlisted.

The duo is also up for Best Restaurant Design for Pirie St Italian diner, Osteria Oggi, while Genesin Studio will compete in the same category for Antica Pizzeria e Cucina on Hutt St.

Awards are announced in Melbourne on November 8.
