Adelaide’s new naval shipbuilding school which will train 5200 students is set to open next year
ADELAIDE’S naval shipbuilding school, which will train about 5200 students over the next decade to work on surface ship and submarine building projects, will open in 2018.

AN Adelaide-based naval shipbuilding college is on track to open early next year after the Federal Government released a request for proposals to run the centre.
The multi-site centre will train about 5200 students over the next decade to work on surface ship and submarine building projects.
Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne said the college would ensure that Australia had a workforce with the right skills to implement the Government’s ambitious $90 billion naval shipbuilding program.
“The initial focus will be on key entry-level trades, and will later expand to include higher education qualifications such as naval architecture and engineering,’’ Mr Pyne said.
“This demonstrates the Government’s commitment to build the capacity and capability of Australia’s skilled workforce to ensure a sustainable naval shipbuilding and sustainment capability in this country for future generations.”
The college will be headquartered in Adelaide, but also run courses in other states. Courses could be outsourced to TAFE colleges, the Australian Maritime College in Launceston and private training providers.
Mr Pyne said the college would work with — instead of competing against — other education providers.
The Government hopes the establishment of the college will help limit the need for foreign workers to be used on shipbuilding projects.
