FOR more than 50 years it had giveth faith, after weeks of demolition, bulldozers have taketh away Maughan Church.
It has taken exactly one month for the church to come down on the corner of Franklin and Pitt as it makes way for Uniting Communities’ $80 million, 20-storey development that includes apartment housing for people with disabilities and a retirement village.
The old church did have a provisional heritage protection but was removed at the request of the State Government so the new development could go ahead.
The project has stirred polarising views about Maughan Church and its heritage values.
Built in 1965, the circular church was listed by the Australian Institute of Architects’ SA chapter as one of the state’s most nationally significant examples of 20th-century design.
But in recent years the church was falling apart and in need of refurbishing before the new development was approved earlier this year.
The new building is expected to be completed by mid-2018.
